This week, several Massachusetts-based cannabis companies sued the federal government arguing that the federal prohibition unconstitutionally encroaches upon state rights. The companies include Canna Provisions; Gyasi Sellers; Wiseacre Farm; and Verano Holdings. Their lawsuit was filed against U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, and contends that the federal Controlled Substances Act conflicts with state legislation, adversely impacts their operations, and jeopardizes public safety due businesses operating largely in cash.
The US House of Representatives has a new Speaker of the House this week after a prolonged series of would-be speakers failed to win the seat in a series of votes. A few cannnabis publications took a look at what that might mean for the cannabis industry, including Fresh Toast and MJBiz.
On November 7th, Ohio voters will consider a legalization measure on their statewide ballot. Governor Mike DeWine has come out against the legalization measure.
A small Swiss community will be home to the first non-medical cannabis dispensary in Europe. The opening is part of a research project to examine how access to legal cannabis may affect health and consumption patterns of regular cannabis consumers.
The publication QZ wanted to find out if legalization of cannabis led to an uptick in traffic accidents. Some highlights from their research: In California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada traffic fatalities declined or remained the same in the three years that followed legalization.
Dutchie’s own Nick DeLeonardis was featured in this week’s CFO Brew talking all things finance, cannabis, his background, and how cannabis differs from other sectors.
For this week’s Cannabis Expert, we share a recent segment that is on our New York application guide: a presentation from Kristin Jordan of Park Jordan in New York. Park Jordan is a real estate brokerage working with cannabis businesses in that state. The presentation walks through real estate considerations that are near universal for cannabis businesses in any jurisdiction.
