MA cannabis companies challenging constitutionality of prohibition

This week, several Massachusetts-based cannabis companies sued the federal government arguing that the federal prohibition unconstitutionally encroaches upon state rights. The companies include Canna Provisions; Gyasi Sellers; Wiseacre Farm; and Verano Holdings. Their lawsuit was filed against U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, and contends that the federal Controlled Substances Act conflicts with state legislation, adversely impacts their operations, and jeopardizes public safety due businesses operating largely in cash.Β

New Speaker of the House and cannabis

The US House of Representatives has a new Speaker of the House this week after a prolonged series of would-be speakers failed to win the seat in a series of votes. A few cannnabis publications took a look at what that might mean for the cannabis industry, including Fresh Toast and MJBiz.Β

Ohio Governor and cannabis legalization vote on Nov. 7

On November 7th, Ohio voters will consider a legalization measure on their statewide ballot. Governor Mike DeWine has come out against the legalization measure.Β

Swiss cannabis research project

A small Swiss community will be home to the first non-medical cannabis dispensary in Europe. The opening is part of a research project to examine how access to legal cannabis may affect health and consumption patterns of regular cannabis consumers.Β

Legal cannabis and traffic fatalities

The publication QZ wanted to find out if legalization of cannabis led to an uptick in traffic accidents. Some highlights from their research: In California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada traffic fatalities declined or remained the same in the three years that followed legalization.Β
